New Secretary!

Posted On: Dec 24, 2007 (19:57:11)
As most of you are aware, the Local 2024 Secretary position will become vacant on January 1 st due to Ryan Herrera’s election to the Presidents position.  Per our Constitution and Bylaws and with concurrence from the IAFF, the E Board is tasked with appointing a member of the local to fill the position for the remainder of the term.  After sending out an email to the membership we received 4 letters of interest.  The interested members were Dan Rice, Layne Winter, Hak-Soo Kim and Scott Ervin.  We were happily surprised by the interest and decided to hold an interview process.

The interviews were held today at Station 64.  We asked the members 10 questions.  They all did well and it was a very tough decision.  After much discussion, the board decided that Scott Ervin would become our new Secretary.  Scott will celebrate 20 years of service on his first day in the position.  In his past 20 years on the job Scott has served nearly 10 of those years on the former Executive Board of Local 3396.  We look forward to tapping into that knowledge in the upcoming year.  Scott will be sworn in at the January 3 rd regular union meeting.

Please help us welcome Scott aboard and a big “thank you” to Dan, Layne and Hak-Soo for their interest in the position.

We look forward to 2008.

Bob Stinnett
Interim President
On behalf of the Local 2024 Executive Board

Senate to Vote on National Collective Bargaining Bill

The U.S. Senate will be considering the IAFF's national collective bargaining bill in the next few days, with a vote to follow. This is expected to be a very close vote, and your senators could be the deciding vote! The IAFF is encouraging all members to call their senators today and tell them to support America's fire fighters and police officers by voting in favor of the Harkin-Kennedy-Gregg "Fire Fighter" amendment to the Farm Bill.

“More than 80,000 IAFF members in 18 states do not currently enjoy basic employment rights,” says IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. “The Harkin-Kennedy-Gregg ‘Fire Fighter’ amendment ensures that every fire fighter has the right to collectively bargain.”

Every Senate office has been educated on the issue. In every office, senators are already receiving dozens of calls -- from constituents in their states who oppose this bill. The IAFF needs to generate as many phone calls as possible in the next 24-48 hours to pass this vital legislation.

The International has fought for the last 12 years to bring this issue to a vote. “Please give five minutes of your time to call your senators and urge them to stand with their fire fighters and support the Harkin-Kennedy-Gregg amendment to the Farm Bill,” urges Schaitberger.

The Senate switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. Simply call this number and ask to be transferred to your senator's office.

“Together, we can achieve one of the biggest victories in the history of the IAFF,” says Schaitberger.

Herrera Elected Local 2024 President

Updated On: Dec 09, 2007 (22:15:00)
CONGRATULATIONS" to Ryan Herrera. Ryan was elected to the position of President of Local 2024 by acclimation at last night’s union meeting. Ryan will begin a 2 year term as local president after being sworn in at the January 3rd 2008 regular union meeting.

"CONGRATULATIONS" also go out to Ed Rickert who was re-elected by acclimation to another 2 year term as the Local 2024 trustee.

Both Ryan and Ed have a strong commit to represent and serve the Local’s membership and will continue do a fine job in their respective positions on the Executive Board.

As a result of the election we will have an opening on the board for the position of secretary. Per our bylaws and in concurrence with the IAFF we will fill the remainder of the term with an interested member appointed by the Executive Board. Any member interested in the secretary’s position shall send an email expressing such interest to the Local 2024 Executive Board by 1700 hours on Friday December 14th. The Executive Board will then set up interviews with the interested members. A decision will be made by the board and the appointed member will be sworn in to the secretary’s position at the January 3rd 2008 regular union meeting.

Duties and responsibilities of the secretary’s position can be found in the Constitution and Bylaws Article VIII of your CBA (contract) booklet. If you have any questions, please contact an Executive Board member.

Again "CONGRATULATIONS" to Ryan and Ed.

Gordie says goodbye

To the Brothers and Sisters of IAFF Local 2024:

It is with very weird feelings that I write to you on my last day as a represented member of Local 2024. The first 4 years of my career I worked for an unrepresented department (I was the only paid person). When I came to Federal Way on September 15th, 1986 I had my first chance to feel like a professional firefighter when I was given that sticker to put on my car window. I still remember being sworn in by past president John Rickert with the 10 other brothers that were hired in our group.

I didn’t really know what that sticker meant until I was schooled my first year by Steve Bonzer and later by Greg Brozek. I went to meetings to be involved and to watch and learn from Bob Stinnett, Rick Chaney, Steve Fromhold, and many others. In 1996 I joined the Executive Board as secretary, replacing Bob Stinnett who had been elected president. It is fitting that Bob will replace me now to serve the remaining 2 months of my term as president.

I am proud to have represented this Local as a delegate to 5 IAFF Conventions and 12 WSCFF Conventions. I have worked with 3 IAFF District 7 V.P.’s including Jim Hill, Paul Harvey, and now Ricky Walsh. Ricky is a consummate trade unionist and I have always admired his passion for this Union. He had a nice comment for me is his latest District 7 blog. If you don’t read that newsletter yet, add it to your favorites. (http://www.iaff7thdistrict.org/ )

I hope that I leave my tenure on the Executive Board with a Local improved from when I started. I owe a lot to the current Board with whom I have served for the last 5 years including Bob Stinnett, Joel Barrett, Ryan Herrera, and Ed Rickert. Along the way, I served with Rick Chaney, Steve Fromhold, Mike Trotto, John Ronald, Shane Youells, Bryan Peterson, Jon Morris, and Sven Schievink. Thanks to you all.

So, I tender my resignation to IAFF Local 2024 effective at midnight tonight (October 14th). I would ask for consideration at the November Union meeting to be allowed to join the “Active Retiree” membership of the Local. My pledge to you will be that I will always be true to the men and women that accomplish the mission of this department.

Thank you,
Your brother always,
Gordie Olson
